Caravaca de la Cruz

Caravaca de La Cruz has approx. 25 000 inhabitants (2017). In 1998 the city was declared a sacred city. Every 7 years there is a major religious celebration.

The legend tells of a miracle that occurred in the year 1232. Two angels brought a special double cross which they placed on the altar before start of a service. Later at this place, the La Basilica de la Vera Cruz Chapel was erected. It is famous for its grand entrance in red marble. Every year in May there is a great celebration of the special cross. Today, Caravaca de la Cruz is Spain’s third most important pilgrimage because of the cross.
